It was nearly ten years ago on October 1, 2015, when ICD-10 replaced ICD-9 in the United States.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed and copyrighted the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). The tenth version (ICD-10) was used to serve as the foundation for identifying statistics and health trends worldwide, while the eleventh version (ICD-11) is completely restructured to take advantage of today’s digital era, not only incorporating clinical content, but also the latest knowledge in digital computing, user interface and modern technology.
Why is the ICD important?
The ICD is important because it provides a common language for monitoring, recording and reporting diseases, disorders and health conditions. This enables the world to share and compare consistent and standardized data.
WHAT’S NEW IN ICD-11 (AS OF 2022)
- There are already 35 countries using ICD-11, with many more in implementation phase.
- ICD-11 is available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic. There are 20 more languages in progress including Russian.
- Support for maternal and perinatal coding.
- Coding for stage and grade of cancers.
- Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements for mental health.
- Coding of rare diseases.
- There were 900 proposals submitted and processed based on input from clinicians, scientists, translators and early adopters.
