Kelly Wisness: Hi, this is Kelly Wisness. Welcome back to the award-winning Hospital Finance Podcast. We’re pleased to welcome back Randi Deckard, BESLER’s Senior Vice President of Client Engagement. In this episode, Randi will provide us with a glimpse into BESLER’s next live Webinar as part of BESLER’s The Hospital Finance Academy Stay Compliant with Updates for Cardiothoracic Coding and Documentation that a leader at our partner, Panacea, is presenting live on Wednesday, November 20, at 1 PM Eastern Time. Welcome back and thank you for joining us, Randy.

Randi Deckard: Thanks for having me back, Kelly.

Kelly: All right, well, let’s go ahead and jump in. So, who will be presenting this webinar?

Randi: Yeah, so I’m super excited. Becky Jacobsen from Panacea will be presenting. And the reason I’m excited that she’s presenting is she also has a clinical background, so she’s a registered nurse. Then, of course, she has coding certifications from AHIMA, CPC, CPEDC, as well as CEMC. That’s a lot of acronyms, right? But it’s phenomenal that she has all these coding certifications. And she has, from her clinical and coding background, a really diverse background because she’s worked in medical offices, providing patient care. You know, she’s coded, she’s been involved with billing and collections. So, she’s one of those people who can really help educate other healthcare personnel with proper interpretation of regulatory guidelines, as well as auditing and educating physicians because she’s been on that clinical side.

Kelly: Right, she sounds very clearly qualified to do this. So, what will this presentation cover?

Randi: Yeah, so this presentation will really help anyone who needs to stay compliant with coding and documentation guidelines for the cardiothoracic specialists. I think it’s one of those areas that’s very expensive. And so, you want to make sure that your coding is correct because any miss could obviously mean dollars. And of course, you don’t want to over code because of compliance.

Kelly: Yeah, most definitely not. So, what are the learning objectives of this webinar?

Randi: Yeah, so there are a few. The first is evaluation and management updates for 2024. There was a small but not insignificant change that you had to remove time ranges for new and established outpatient codes and replace that with a single total time amount. And those times must be met or exceeded. So, it’s one of those nuances that is super important. The other one is teaching physician guidelines. So, any academic health center, this is super critical. And then another area is an evaluation and management refresher and documentation tips as it relates to medical decision making. And I think the framework that she provides will be very helpful and actionable by anyone who attends, as well as a surgical refresher. Once again, the surgical cases around cardiac events are very expensive. So, understanding this is super, super critical. And then a modifier assignment and documentation support those modifiers. Remember, everything that you do needs to be audit defensible.

Kelly: Most definitely, that’s a good reminder too. So, what will be covered in the surgical procedure section?

Randi: She’s going to cover modifier 22, which is around the increased procedural services, as well as endoscopy, aortic graft repair, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, as well as robotics. And especially on the outpatient ambulatory side, robotics are used a lot. So super important for the surgical procedure section.

Kelly: Sounds like it. So, who should attend this webinar that’s coming on November 20th?

Randi: Yeah, first of all, anyone who is behind on their CEUs, so coders and auditors, educators, providers, compliance personnel. And of course, consultants could gain valuable insights to coding and documentation guidelines around this topic.

Kelly: Yeah, I think it really does appeal to a lot of different audiences. So, thank you so much for joining us, Randi, and for sharing this sneak peek into the upcoming Academy session – Stay Compliant with Updates for Cardiothoracic Coding and Documentation – that our partner, Panacea, is presenting live on Wednesday, November 20, at 1 PM Eastern Time. And as you mentioned, as a bonus, you can earn CEU. Thank you so much, Randi.

Randi: Thank you, Kelly.

Kelly: And thank you all for joining us for this episode of The Hospital Finance Podcast. Until next time…
